Folic acid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004568
The synthetic, oxidized form of folate, a B-vitamin, used in dietary supplements and for food fortification. It is converted within the body to tetrahydrofolate, a coenzyme involved in the synthesis of nucleic acids and the metabolism of amino acids. Adequate intake before and during early pregnancy significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
