Biosynthesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001326
The formation of a compound inside a living cell through a sequence of enzyme-catalysed reactions that assemble more complex molecules from simpler starting materials. Pathways of this kind build the proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and other products the organism needs. Biosynthesis constructs a compound from small precursors, whereas biotransformation only modifies a compound that already exists.
