Lathyrism

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006484

A neurotoxic disorder caused by the consumption of certain legumes, particularly those from the Lathyrus genus, which contain neurotoxins like beta-N-oxalylamino-L-alanine (BOAA). This condition primarily affects the central nervous system, leading to paralysis of the lower limbs and other neurological symptoms. It is often associated with famine conditions where these legumes are a primary food source.
