Ciguatera poisoning

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002073

A form of foodborne illness caused by the consumption of reef fish contaminated with neurotoxins called ciguatoxins. These toxins are produced by dinoflagellates of the genus Gambierdiscus, which are eaten by herbivorous fish and then bioaccumulate up the marine food chain to larger predatory fish. Symptoms include gastrointestinal distress, cardiovascular issues, and neurological effects, such as the characteristic reversal of hot and cold sensations.
