Itai-itai disease

A chronic and painful bone disease caused by severe cadmium poisoning, characterized by osteomalacia, kidney dysfunction, and bone fractures. The name, meaning 'ouch-ouch' in Japanese, reflects the intense pain experienced by affected individuals. This condition was first identified in Japan due to industrial pollution of rivers with cadmium, leading to contamination of the food chain.
