Helium-cadmium laser

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005166

A type of gas laser that uses a mixture of helium and cadmium vapor as its active medium to produce coherent light. The helium atoms are excited and then transfer energy to cadmium ions, which subsequently emit photons. These lasers are often used for their blue (441.6 nm) and ultraviolet (325.0 nm) output wavelengths in applications such as holography and fluorescence spectroscopy.
