Surface ionization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011651

An ionization process where atoms or molecules are adsorbed onto a heated surface and subsequently desorb as ions. The efficiency of ionization depends on the work function of the surface and the ionization potential or electron affinity of the adsorbed species. This method is often employed for the analysis of alkali metals and other low ionization potential elements.
