Addition reaction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000227
A chemical process where two or more distinct molecules join to create a single, larger product molecule, with all atoms from the reactants being incorporated into the final structure. This type of reaction is characteristic of compounds with multiple bonds, such as alkenes or alkynes, where the pi bond is broken to form two new sigma bonds. An example is the halogenation of ethene, where C2H4 reacts with Br2 to form 1,2-dibromoethane, C2H4Br2.
