Sigmatropic rearrangement
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010851
A pericyclic reaction involving the concerted migration of a sigma bond across a conjugated pi system, accompanied by a concomitant reorganization of the pi electrons. The migrating group moves from one end of the pi system to the other, while the total number of sigma and pi bonds remains constant. These reactions are classified by the order of the sigma bond that breaks and the new sigma bond that forms, denoted as an (i,j) shift.
