Chloride cell

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002015

A specialized cell found in the gills of fish and other aquatic organisms, responsible for maintaining ion balance and osmoregulation. These cells actively transport chloride ions, and consequently other ions and water, across biological membranes to regulate internal salinity. They are particularly abundant in marine fish, which must excrete excess salt.
