Chloramines
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002014
Compounds derived from ammonia or a primary or secondary amine by the replacement of one or more hydrogen atoms attached to nitrogen with chlorine atoms. The parent compounds are monochloramine (NH2Cl), dichloramine (NHCl2), and nitrogen trichloride (NCl3). Chloramines are used as disinfectants in water treatment systems because they are more stable and produce fewer disinfection byproducts than free chlorine, providing a longer-lasting residual disinfectant in the water distribution network.
