Diatom
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001057
A single-celled alga that secretes a hard, porous cell wall made of silica, known as a frustule. These microscopic organisms live in aquatic environments and are a major component of phytoplankton. Accumulations of diatom frustules form diatomaceous earth, which can be a source rock for hydrocarbons or a reservoir rock itself.
