Diapir
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001056
A dome-shaped or anticlinal structure formed when a mobile, ductile material, such as salt or shale, pierces and intrudes overlying, more brittle rock layers. The upward movement of this material is driven by density contrasts and overburden pressure. Salt diapirs are common traps for hydrocarbon accumulations in many basins worldwide.
