Subsalt

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003672

Describing geological formations or hydrocarbon reservoirs located beneath thick layers of salt, typically halite. These salt layers can create complex seismic imaging challenges due to their high velocity and plastic deformation. Subsalt plays are known for hosting large, high-pressure, high-temperature hydrocarbon accumulations, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Brazil.
