Salt dome
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003231
A dome-shaped structure formed when a thick bed of evaporite minerals, primarily halite, intrudes upward into overlying sedimentary rock layers. The upward movement of salt, driven by its lower density compared to surrounding sediments, creates structural traps for hydrocarbons. These geological features are prolific oil and gas producers in regions like the Gulf Coast of the United States.
