The mineralogical name for rock salt, composed of sodium chloride (NaCl). It is a common evaporite mineral that forms from the evaporation of seawater or saline lake water. Thick halite deposits can act as excellent seals for hydrocarbon reservoirs due to their low permeability and ductility.
