Anhydrite
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000122
A common evaporite mineral composed of anhydrous calcium sulfate (CaSO4). It forms when gypsum loses its water of crystallization, often due to burial and increased temperature and pressure. Anhydrite layers can act as effective seals for hydrocarbon reservoirs due to their low permeability, preventing the upward migration of oil and gas.
