Caprock
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000538
An impermeable or very low-permeability rock layer that overlies a porous and permeable reservoir rock, preventing the upward migration of hydrocarbons. It forms the seal that contains oil or gas within a structural or stratigraphic trap. Common caprock lithologies include shale, anhydrite, and salt, which are effective seals due to their fine-grained texture or crystalline structure.
