Trap

A geological configuration of porous reservoir rock and impermeable seal rock that prevents hydrocarbons from migrating further and allows them to accumulate. Traps are classified as structural (e.g., anticlines, faults) or stratigraphic (e.g., pinch-outs, reefs). The presence of an effective trap is one of the essential elements of a petroleum system.
