Fault trap
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001378
A structural trap for hydrocarbons formed when faulting creates a barrier to fluid migration. The movement of rock layers along a fault plane juxtaposes a permeable reservoir rock against an impermeable rock, such as shale, which prevents oil and gas from escaping. This sealing mechanism can occur along normal, reverse, or strike-slip faults, and the resulting accumulations are a common exploration target worldwide.
