Accumulation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000023

A body of hydrocarbons, either oil or natural gas, trapped in a reservoir rock beneath the Earth's surface. It forms when migrating hydrocarbons encounter a geological trap, such as an anticline or fault, and are prevented from further movement by an impermeable seal rock. The size and quality of an accumulation determine its economic viability for production.
