Pinch out
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002794
The lateral termination of a rock layer where its thickness progressively thins to zero, ending against another formation. A pinch out forms a type of stratigraphic trap when a porous reservoir rock, such as sandstone, thins out and is enclosed by impermeable rock like shale. This geometry prevents the further migration of hydrocarbons, causing them to accumulate against the seal.
A geological feature where a rock layer thins progressively and disappears, often forming a wedge shape. This termination can create a stratigraphic trap for hydrocarbons if a permeable reservoir rock pinches out against an impermeable seal. Such features are identified through seismic data and well logs.
