Seal

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003287

  1. An impermeable rock layer that prevents the upward or lateral migration of hydrocarbons from a reservoir rock, trapping them to form an accumulation. Common seal rocks include shales, evaporites, and dense limestones. The effectiveness of a seal is determined by its thickness, lateral continuity, and capillary entry pressure.

  2. Impermeable rock formations that prevent the upward or lateral migration of hydrocarbons from a reservoir. These formations, typically shales, evaporites, or tight carbonates, form a barrier that traps oil and gas. The effectiveness of a seal is determined by its thickness, lateral extent, and capillary entry pressure.
