Reservoir

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003113

A subsurface rock formation that has sufficient porosity and permeability to store and transmit hydrocarbons, such as oil or natural gas. These formations are usually sedimentary rocks like sandstone, limestone, or dolomite, where hydrocarbons accumulate in pore spaces. A reservoir must be capped by an impermeable seal rock to prevent hydrocarbon escape.
