Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000170

A subsurface layer of permeable rock, such as sandstone or fractured limestone, or unconsolidated materials like gravel and sand, that can store and transmit groundwater. It acts as a reservoir for water, which can be extracted through wells. In oil and gas, aquifers can provide water drive for hydrocarbon reservoirs or serve as disposal zones for produced water.
