Anticline

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000144

An upward-arching fold in rock strata, resembling an arch or dome, where the oldest rocks are found in the core of the fold. It forms due to compressional tectonic forces that deform sedimentary layers. Anticlines are frequently associated with hydrocarbon traps, as oil and gas can migrate upwards and accumulate in the crest beneath an impermeable cap rock.
