The uppermost layer or part of a geological body, most often the caprock that forms over the crest of a salt dome, a mass of anhydrite, gypsum and limestone left behind as the salt dissolves. In petroleum geology the word also appears in cap rock, the impermeable layer that seals a trap, and in gas cap, the free gas that lies above oil in a reservoir.
