Gas cap
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001613
A layer of free natural gas that accumulates above an oil column in a petroleum reservoir, trapped by an overlying impermeable rock layer. This gas is in thermodynamic equilibrium with the underlying oil and often provides a natural drive mechanism for oil production. The size and pressure of the gas cap influence reservoir performance and recovery strategies.
