Evaporitic
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001340
Describing a sedimentary rock, mineral, or depositional environment associated with the precipitation of salts from a concentrated aqueous solution due to evaporation. These deposits, known as evaporites, form in arid settings such as restricted marine basins or terrestrial salt lakes where water outflow is less than inflow and evaporation. Common evaporitic minerals include halite (rock salt), gypsum, and anhydrite, which often form impermeable cap rocks or seals above hydrocarbon reservoirs, preventing the upward migration of oil and gas.
