Salt

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003230

A naturally occurring evaporite mineral, primarily halite (sodium chloride), formed by the evaporation of saline water bodies. Salt deposits can act as impermeable seals for hydrocarbon reservoirs and, due to their lower density, can form diapirs and domes that create structural traps. These formations are common in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea.
