Evaporite
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001339
A sedimentary rock formed by the precipitation of mineral salts from evaporating water. These deposits occur in arid environments where water bodies, such as seas or lakes, undergo intense evaporation, leading to supersaturation of dissolved minerals. Common evaporite minerals include halite (rock salt), gypsum, and anhydrite, which can form seals for hydrocarbon reservoirs.
