Trap

A geological formation that impedes the migration of fluids, such as oil, gas, or water, allowing them to accumulate in a reservoir. Traps are formed by structural features like folds and faults, or by stratigraphic variations in rock permeability. Identifying and characterizing these geological traps is a primary objective in petroleum exploration.
