Trapper

A historical mining job, often performed by a young boy, involving the operation of a ventilation door in an underground haulage way. The trapper's duty was to open the door to allow miners and coal tubs to pass through and then quickly close it to maintain the integrity of the mine's air circulation system. This position was made obsolete by the implementation of self-closing or mechanically operated ventilation doors.
