Flat lad

A mine worker, historically a boy or young man, responsible for managing the movement of tubs or trams at a flat, which is a siding or meeting point in an underground haulage road. The flat lad's duties included coupling and uncoupling tubs from the haulage rope and organizing their movement to and from the working face. This role was part of the underground transport system before full mechanization.
