Petroliferous

Describing a rock formation or geological region that contains petroleum, including crude oil and natural gas. A petroliferous basin is a large-scale depression in the Earth's crust where sediments have accumulated and, under specific conditions of heat and pressure, generated and trapped hydrocarbons. The identification of these basins is the first step in petroleum exploration, guiding seismic surveys and exploratory drilling.
