Reformer
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004749
A processing unit in a petroleum refinery or chemical plant that converts low-octane hydrocarbons into high-octane components or valuable aromatic compounds. Catalytic reformers use heat, pressure, and a catalyst, often platinum-based, to restructure hydrocarbon molecules in feedstock like naphtha. A steam reformer, by contrast, produces hydrogen by reacting natural gas or other hydrocarbons with steam at high temperatures.
