Cymogene
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001533
The most volatile liquid hydrocarbon fraction obtained from the distillation of crude petroleum or natural gas. Composed primarily of butane, it has an extremely low boiling point and must be kept under pressure to remain in a liquid state at normal temperatures. Due to its high volatility and ability to produce intense cold upon evaporation, it was one of the earliest substances used as a refrigerant in ice-making machines in the 19th century.
