Narrow-cut
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003852
To excavate a thin slice of a coal seam or orebody, often as the first step in a sequence of extraction operations. This initial cut creates a free face, relieving stress in the rock mass and making subsequent, wider cuts easier to break out. In longwall mining, the shearer's pass along the face is a form of narrow-cut, with web depths ranging from 0.6 to 1.2 meters.
