Jadding

To make a deep, narrow cut into a rock or coal face using a specialized long-headed pick. This historical hand-mining technique, also called holing, created a free face that made it easier to break down the main body of the material above or below the cut. Jadding was physically demanding labor performed by colliers in confined spaces to prepare the seam for extraction.
