Nicking

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003893

  1. The process of cutting a vertical channel or groove into a coal seam at the side of the working face. This cut defines the block of coal to be extracted and weakens it for subsequent removal by undercutting and blasting or mechanical means. Nicking is performed with a specialized cutting machine or by hand, creating a clean break line for the coal block.

  2. The small coal produced in making a nicking, the vertical cut a hewer made at the side of the coal face. It is the dust and small coal that falls as that groove is cut, and small coal of this kind was lower in value than the large coal won from the face.
