A block of coal at the working face that has been undercut by a miner in preparation for being broken down and removed. The process involves cutting a horizontal slot at the bottom of the coal seam, leaving the mass of coal above to be wedged or blasted down. This traditional method, associated with room and pillar mining, contrasts with modern mechanized longwall techniques where a shearer cuts coal continuously along the face.
