A rectangular block of a coal seam or ore body that is designated for extraction as a single unit in an underground mine. In longwall mining, a panel is the large section of coal, perhaps 300 meters wide and several kilometers long, extracted between two parallel roadways. Room and pillar mining also extracts ore in a series of panels, leaving pillars for support.
