Room and pillar

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004935

A method of underground mining where mineral deposits are extracted in a series of 'rooms' or open excavations, while 'pillars' of the same material are left in place to support the mine roof. This technique is widely applied to relatively flat-lying ore bodies such as coal seams or bedded deposits. The size and spacing of pillars are engineered to maintain stability throughout the mine's operational life.
