Craunch
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006894
A piece of a vein or stratum left uncut in the workings to serve as a support for the roof. It is a pillar of ground deliberately left in place, the opposite of removing rock to enlarge a roadway. Such uncut blocks hold up the roof of the opening around them, as the pillars of a pillar-and-stall working do.
