Cog
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006870
A projection left on a timber that fits into a matching notch in the piece that crosses it, locking the joint. In a cogged joint the lower timber is notched on both sides of a central cog that is left uncut, and the upper timber is notched to take the cog. The cog stops the two timbers from sliding sideways against each other.
