Dap

A notch or recess cut into a timber or beam to receive another structural member, creating a strong, interlocking joint. This technique is employed in heavy timber construction, such as in post-and-beam framing, to transfer loads effectively and prevent slippage. The depth of a dap is typically a fraction of the timber's thickness.
