Dado

A rectangular groove cut across the grain of a piece of wood, designed to receive the end or edge of another piece. This joint provides a strong mechanical connection and is frequently used in shelving units, cabinet construction, and drawer bottoms. The depth of a dado typically ranges from one-third to one-half the thickness of the material.
