Cog mill

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001218

A type of mill, particularly a historic gristmill, that uses wooden gears, or cogs, to transmit power from the main source to the millstones. The large pit wheel, turned by water or wind, engages with a smaller lantern pinion or wallower gear fitted with wooden staves or cogs to increase the rotational speed for grinding. The use of wood, especially apple or hornbeam for the cogs, reduced friction and was easier to repair than early cast-iron gearing.
