Mortise wheel

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003759

A gear wheel whose teeth are separate hardwood cogs fitted into mortises in its face or rim, with the wheel body made of wood or cast iron. It meshes with an iron or wooden pinion, as in the drive trains of windmills and watermills. A worn cog can be knocked out and replaced without remaking the wheel, and the wheel is also called a mortise gear.
