  "definition": "A rack railway system in which a locomotive pinion meshes with toothed steel bars laid between the running rails to climb steep gradients. Two or three parallel bars are used with their teeth offset, so the pinion always has teeth engaged and drives smoothly. Devised by Carl Roman Abt, it is used on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway in Colorado and the Snowdon Mountain Railway in Wales.",
